Julia Gillard has been called a hypocrite in some circles for going to the royal wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton.
She was called that due to her republican leanings. Apparently if she did not go it would have made some kind of a positive pro republican statement. Somehow, kind of, like, you know.
It wouldn’t have been seen positively in the international arena if Julia did not go, it would likely to be seen as silly.
If Australia was a republic she would still have been invited. Having the same monarch as Britain was not a prerequisite for an invitation.
By going the prime minister has actually done the right thing. There was nothing to gain by not going and actually something to lose. Not very much but it is better not to look silly or petulant.
Also she can brag to her friends that she got to go to the royal wedding and they didn’t.
